Oh her way to talking

Petting Oscar

Experts say that normally when there's a pet in the house a child's first words are related to those pets.

Oscar and Oliver are still a little uncertain about this new, hairless, puppy. They know they like to take her crackers. They know they like to lick her milky face. They know they like to chew her toys and bibs and (try to chew) her diapers and wipes. But other than that they really don't see a purpose to her existence. The screaming, the fur pulling, the attention hogging. It's rather funny, actually, the way they skirt around her... unless she's holding or dropping or covered in food, that is.

But, the other day, I was holding Julia on my lap and Oscar came up to a non eating, dropping, or covered in food Julia, and he looked deep into her eyes and sniffed her all over, gave a quick (hopeful) lick to her face, and then snorted and walked away. Julia leaned after him and I said to her, "doggie, doggie" and she said, carefully, "da"(no exclamation point this time.)

So... what do you think? Do you think she was trying to say doggie? She's said that syllable several times while looking at the dogs. Of course she's said that syllable several times looking at other things, too. But it sounds so careful and deliberate when she says it to the dogs, and so exclamatory and practice-like when she says it other times...
